LNC’s dedication to the protection of the flora and fauna of the conservancy for the last 40 years has put it in a unique position to be able to undertake a REDD+ project. The REDD+ initiative aims to make forests more valuable standing than they would be cut down, by creating a financial value (carbon credits) for the carbon stored in trees and vegetation.

These carbon credits can then be purchased by companies to offset their carbon emissions. The Mukutan REDD+ project will provide a sustainable long-term revenue stream for the Conservancy and develop new community and environmental projects aimed at safeguarding the biodiversity. By channeling a portion of proceeds from the REDD+ project into a community fund the project will provide a direct conceptual link between the protection of biodiversity and an income for communities, incentivizing them into a stewardship of the biodiversity and empowering the community to shape their future by stimulating ecologically sustainable economic development. The REDD+ model has proven successful in creating community conservancies in other parts of Kenya and this project offers a major opportunity for the surrounding community areas.
