Land of Hope
Located in an area that only a few years ago was torn apart by ethnic and politically based violence and then abandoned, Land of Hope is now a vibrant eco-friendly community center where women, children and youth from different ethnicities come together. Land of Hope gives women and youth employment training and enhances resilience and livelihoods through the provision of basic health and educational services.
Studies have shown that the greatest impact one can make on a person’s lifetime success is before the age of 5 when children are at their most receptive. At Land of Hope we have a pre-school and play facility with volunteer Montessori teachers where small children come whilst their mothers learn skills in the vocational training or adult literacy classes.
There is also a state of the art High Altitude Sports Training Centre. Many youth in the area have been unable to finish their education or get jobs. They return to their communities disenfranchised and bored, at this delicate age it is easy for them to slip into a life of crime such as poaching or cattle raiding . In a study conducted by the Gallmann Memorial Foundation, 90% of youth said that what they missed the most was entertainment and group activities, they prioritized this above income generation possibilities. Yet, they are remarkably physically fit and take great pride in their physical aptitude.
Thus, the High Altitude Sports Training centre was born at Land of Hope. So far 6 young men and women have been picked for further training at the Kipchoge Kipkeino Olympic Training facility.
In line with the Government pledge of introducing laptop in all Kenyan schools, we are at the front line of training the youngest kids-2 to 4- in the use of computers:
Land of Hope consists of:
- A pre-school center with play and learning facilities for young children
- A women’s empowerment and vocational training center for beading, craft making, and tailoring
- A youth campus with a state-of the-art high altitude sports coaching center
- A bore hole which supplies water to the community
- Plans afoot for a library, organic vegetable garden
We are currently raising funds for a computer lab for Land of Hope, we have matched funding and if we can raise $5000 our implementing partner will be able to give us 20 small laptops, teacher training and solar power, we are also continuing to build as many bee hives as possible, one beehive costs $50, you will receive a picture of your beehive and we can also write a message on it for a loved on… for more information on these projects please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
