It will be Laikipia
12th May 2017, Nairobi
On a fast stretcher
rolled through corridors
down a lift into an ambulance
this afternoon I left the hospital
that has been my home
for the last three weeks.
Weeks gone
into a fog of numbing pain,
operating theatres
and medicine drips, X rays, oxygen, blood pressure, injections, routine.
Kind doctors in turbans
Efficient nurses in blue
I staring at ceiling
at my stretched legs
in white stockings
Flowers in vases
Well wishers cards
The framed print of pink hibiscus
Tall window with curtains,
Learning to breath,
Learning to eat, learning to walk,
Trying to forget.
Trying to remember.
Ambulance stops
Leaves leaves overhead
The tall bamboo friends greet me,
Palm trees beckon with monkeys
Hadada birds circle high
On the path to my bedroom
Faithful hands
have spread petals of flowers
When my body heals it will be
Laikipia
